The Groove Krewe - Run to Daylight (2022)

The Groove Krewe, featuring Nick Daniels III from Dumpstaphunk, drops a ton of seriously funky New Orleans R&B all over their new release Run To Daylight

The group is run by South Louisiana masterminds Rex Pearce and Dale Murray, who are both top musicians, producers, and songwriters who have seen their original songs find homes in films, on national TV, and on the radio. For this project that features lights-out vocalist and bassist Nick Daniels III of Dumpstaphunk, Pearce and Murray assembled an agile and talented bunch of Louisiana’s best players and dubbed them The Groove Krewe for reasons that will become obvious once you start listening. The sessions went down at Techno Sound Studios in Baton Rouge with Grammy-nominated engineer Nelson Blanchard at the board and were mixed in New Orleans by Grammy Award winner David Farrell.

Daniels is an absolute monster of a musician with a strong, soul-drenched voice and bass chops that have led him to gigs with The Neville Brothers, Uptown All-Stars, Zachary Richard, The Wild Magnolia Indians, Allen Toussaint, and Etta James. With Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk, Daniels has played major venues across the USA and opened for The Dave Matthews Band and The Rolling Stones. He has more than earned his place in the firmament of New Orleans music and brings a lot to this particular party. The Groove Krewe lineup of drummer Eddie Bayers, percussionist Nelson Blanchard, lead guitarist Jonathon “Boogie” Long, rhythm guitarist Rex Pearce, keyboardist Nelson Blanchard, and the horn section of Jason Parfait and Ian Smith completes the picture and puts out nothing but horsepower on every tune here.

The record kicks off with its title song and lead single “Run To Daylight.” The cut is a blues-based funk workout that’s driven by Daniels’ big vocal tone and super-funky bass lines. Between those extremes, the horns kick and blast, the guitars slice and scream, and the drums supply one heck of a heartbeat. Daniels’ sonic presence on the lead vocal mic is undeniable and he has the tight phrasing and strong belt needed to surf on top of this mighty band with style and grace.

“That’s New Orleans” is another rump-shaking funk track that extols the virtues of life in The Big Easy and the people who make the city what it is. When you hear it, you’ll start thinking about getting yourself back down there and diving into the Louisiana lifestyle. Daniels’ bass work is especially important to this song and he provides much of its authentic feel.

The Groove Krewe shifts into a delectable 70s soul vibration on the kinetic “Have A Party.” It’s one of those happy, dance-til-you-drop songs that sends spirits soaring and makes this world worth living in. It’s slick, upbeat, and nothing but fun. Daniels turns in perhaps his strongest vocal performance of the album on this amazing track, filling center stage with his life-affirming magic. If this one doesn’t get you out of your seat, please seek medical attention.

The shuffling “Sweet Situation” is another spotlight for Daniels’ fine bass playing and his lines are beyond reproach. He powers through this dance floor track like a hurricane and takes us along for the ride. Backed by The Groove Krew, he seems to be able to rock the joint at will and makes everything he touches come to life. Other must-hear highlights on the record include “I’m Gonna Prove My Love” and “Raising Cane On The Bayou.” Run To Daylight is a wildly-entertaining set that’s here to shake your bones all summer long. Don’t miss a second of it.

Fantastic Negrito - White Jesus Black Problems (2022)

Fantastic Negrito's upcoming album and short film "White Jesus Black Problems" was inspired by a search into his ancestry where he found that his 7th generation grandmother was a Scottish indentured servant who entered into a common law marriage with an African American enslaved man, his 7th generation grandfather, in open defiance of the racist laws of 1750's colonial Virginia.

Their love story is a healing testament to standing up against inhumane and brutal systems with love as your only weapon. Their perseverance is a lesson in today's polarized society on the virtues of constant struggle in the face of ignorance, fear, and violence, which is still present in the contemporary embodiments of white supremacy, bigotry, and hatred. It's important to tell the story of how those who suffered much greater indignities and violence than we do in contemporary times were nonetheless able to preserve their humanity through human connection and the determination to love. If they can do it in 1759, we can do it 2022.

Brian Culbertson - The Trilogy, Pt. 3 White (2022)

Even though Brian Culbertson might be categorized as jazz lite, his music has enough "oomph" to keep you interested. The talented composer, arranger, keyboardist, and trombonist displayed a talent beyond his years at an early age, and credits his dad with helping him develop an ear for the type of music he makes. His father, Jim Culbertson, a respected high school jazz band director and trumpeter, cultivated a love of sanguine sounds in the young Brian, who eagerly listened to anything his dad put on the stereo. Their Decatur, Illinois, home would be alive with the recorded sounds of Maynard Ferguson, Buddy Rich, the Brecker Brothers, and David Sanborn. Growing up, Culbertson also listened to '70s R&B/pop/funk bands like Blood, Sweat & Tears, Tower of Power, and Earth, Wind & Fire. He began his musical training at the age of eight with piano lessons; at nine he moved to drums, at ten trombone, and at 12 bass. Bored with classical recital pieces, he began composing in junior high. By his freshman year in high school, he was experimenting with the then-new Yamaha DX-7 synthesizer and an old four-track recorder in the basement of his parents' home. His dedication earned him six individual and five group Down Beat student awards. During his high school years, he started getting into MIDI sequencing and synthesizers. He couldn't find players who were able to play his songs on the level he wanted, as most of his peers were into heavy metal, so Culbertson, who cites pop producer/songwriter David Foster (Earth, Wind & Fire's "After the Love Is Gone") as one of his strongest influences, learned how to play all the parts himself. After graduation, Culbertson headed to Chicago to begin studies in the music program at DePaul University. On campus, he began to run into high-level musicians and started playing in a band. A family friend helped Culbertson get a deal with Mesa/Blue Moon in 1994. In the bedroom of the apartment he shared with three college buddies, Culbertson single-handedly recorded his debut album, Long Night Out. The album spent ten consecutive weeks in the Top Five of the adult contemporary charts. On his follow-up album, Modern Life, Culbertson eschewed the one-man band approach in favor of a live band made up of some of the best musicians in Chicago, plus stellar saxophonist Gerald Albright. He's since put out several other albums, including After Hours (1995), Secrets (1997), and Somethin' Bout Love (1999). Culbertson's productions include albums by Bob Mamet and Steve Cole. Having gotten into composing advertising jingles, Culbertson set his sights on soundtracks. In 2001 the pianist (who could play the trombone, trumpet, and percussion as well) released Nice & Slow, followed by Come on Up in 2003. Two years later he issued It's on Tonight, and in 2006 Soulful Christmas, a collection of holiday favorites as well as an original. In 2008 Culbertson released Bringing Back the Funk, an acclaimed album that is credited with bringing new life to the urban jazz genre. It featured a sizable list of collaborators including Bootsy Collins, Larry Graham, Ray Parker, Jr., and David T. Walker, just to name a few. He followed it with a live album in 2009 and XII, a return to the studio, in 2010. In June of 2012, Culbertson released Dreams, his 13th album, featuring a host of all-star contemporary jazz and R&B session players and vocalists. Later that year he set about realizing a dream project. Now an independent artist, Culbertson had long desired to revisit the music from his 1994 debut offering, A Long Night Out, which was initially cut in his apartment on a very limited budget. He played most of the instruments himself but also enlisted a small backing group. In 2013 he re-recorded the same tracks, with a large all-star lineup that included Nathan East, Russ Freeman, Steve Lukather, and Candy Dulfer, to name a few, plus a 33-piece orchestra. Entitled Another Long Night Out, it was issued on his own BCM label in February of 2014. In 2016, Culbertson delivered the concert album Live: 20th Anniversary Tour, showcasing his band in concert at Yoshi's in San Francisco.

Following up on their explosive and critically acclaimed debut album Free To Believe (2015, Do Right Music), Canada s premiere deep funk outfit The Soul Motivators are back with their sophomore album 'Do The Damn Thing'. The 9-track album delivers a heavy dose of the band s signature funk sound, incorporating the soulful sensibilities of lead vocalist Shahi Teruko, who has been performing and touring with the band for the past two years and makes her recorded debut here.

Do the damn thing! is a phrase we used during rehearsals to get us back on track when we started to overcomplicate things. Is it funky? Is it soulful? Then just do the damn thing! This no-nonsense approach has resulted in a cohesive and focused, straight-up funk record.

From the high-octane Mindblastin and All the Way to the Bank to the moody Black Rhino and the car-chase MSFBs-inspired Savalas which show off the Motivators instrumental grooves, Do The Damn Thing is guaranteed to appeal to the most discerning funk fans

The band continues to broaden their definition of soul music from a spiritual, political and social standpoint, as evidenced by the album s most poignant and introspective moment, Modern Superwoman featuring lyrics penned by Teruko

Modern Superwoman is an anthem for women, specifically the women who are out there raising families on their own, working around the clock and living life on their own terms without excuses. she says, There is no force in the world more powerful than that of a mother and this song is a celebration of those women.

S&A 2017

Pioneers of the London Acid Jazz scene, The Brand New Heavies translated their love for the funk grooves of the 1970s into a sophisticated sound that carried the torch for classic soul in an era dominated by Hip-Hop. Formed in 1985 by drummer/keyboardist Jan Kincaid, guitarist Simon Bartholomew, and bassist/keyboardist Andrew Levy - longtime school friends from the London suburb of Ealing - The Brand New Heavies were originally an instrumental unit inspired by the James Brown and Meters records its members heard while clubbing the rare groove scene in vogue at the moment. The trio soon began recording their own music, gaining enormous exposure when their demo tracks were spun at the influential Cat in the Hat Club.

Eventually adding a brass section, the Brand New Heavies built a cult following throughout the London club circuit, surviving the shift that saw the rare groove scene fade in the wake of acid house. After an earlier recording deal with Cooltempo yielded the single "Got to Give," the Heavies -- now including vocalist Jay Ella Ruth -- signed with the fledgling indie label Acid Jazz; recorded on a budget of just 8,000 pounds, the group's self-titled LP appeared in 1990 to strong critical acclaim, resulting in a licensing deal with the American company Delicious Vinyl. With Ruth now out of the band, Delicious Vinyl hand-picked N'dea Davenport as her successor, insisting the Heavies re-record tracks from their debut for their first U.S. effort, also an eponymous release that appeared in 1992.

After scoring at home with "Dream Come True" and "Stay This Way," the single "Never Stop" soon landed on the American R&B charts, with the Heavies the first British group to accomplish such a feat with a debut single since Soul II Soul several years earlier; a subsequent New York performance augmented by rappers Q-Tip (A Tribe Called Quest) and MC Serch (3rd Bass) inspired the group to begin absorbing Hip-Hop, and that summer they cut "Heavy Rhyme Experience Vol. 1", an album including guest appearances by rappers including Main Source, Gang Starr, Grand Puba, and the Pharcyde. 1994's Brother Sister, which went platinum in Britain, was Davenport's last recording with the Heavies before beginning a solo career; she was replaced by singer Siedah Garrett in time for 1997's Shelter. Two years later, the group reappeared with a British best-of album entitled Trunk Funk: The Best of the Brand New Heavies; the title was recycled the following year for an American compilation, Trunk Funk Classics: 1991-2000, which featured a new song recorded with Davenport. In early 2006 it was announced that Davenport would be reuniting with the group. A new album, Get Used to It, was released later that year and was followed by a tour of the U.K. and Europe. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide
