"The vintage tones swing and punch – like early ‘60s Wanda Jackson possessing a young Joan Jett as backed by the Stray Cats. But after looking under the hood of Let’s Do This Thing, there’s much more here than a classic engine. [Kerry Pastine] delivers some next level you-know-what."
- Eric Shea - Pandora Pick of the Week
"Kerry Pastine & the Crime Scene's songs should be in Quentin Tarantino movies. There’s a fierceness in the band’s energetic live shows; the musicians clearly feed off of each other."
- Jon Solomon - Westword Feature Article
"These folks are nasty and fun my friends... Beware, judging from what I've been hearing, they will not be Denver's little secret for long."
- Dan Aykroyd (aka Elwood Blues) - House of Blues Radio Hour
"[Kerry Pastine] got the best response I saw all day, with people actually out on the floor and dancing. And rightly so: The energy was high and lively, and the grooves were flawless. Verdict: A group of fantastic musicians obviously having a great time at what they do... Throw them to the top of the heap of festival bands."
- Jef Otte - Westword
"[Kerry Pastine delivers] old-school rock & roll that shouts wonderful and diverse testimonies of the human condition. [The music is a mix of] unruly garage rock, boppin' rockabilly, jumped-up blues and pointy-toe soul. Confidence-to-kill playing suits [Kerry Pastine's] whip crack vibe. This fun skirts dangerousness, but that's OK -- it's on our side. Recommended."
- DC Larson - No Depression
"Masterfully blending with the satin and kick of instruments that waste not one note, [Kerry Pastine's voice] flows effortlessly across the 12 diamond-sharp tracks. [She] is able to angle, crack and pop the songs in a way that suggests a renewal more than a retread."
- Richard Davis - Ol' Skool Rods Magazine
"...These guys 'get it' and understand how to take a bit from the past, add bit from the present and come up with something familiar yet fresh."
- Rick Galusha - Blueswax Ezine
"Simply put, Kerry Pastine's voice could bring the smokiest, sweatiest dive bar to its knees. She's got the swagger of [Janis] Joplin and skills of [Alanis] Morissette with a band behind her jumping effortlessly from pop to deep blues but never losing the rock energy."

Three years after the 2016 release of their award-winning CD Relentless, Montreal’s The Paul DesLauriers Band is back with their ambitious new album Bounce, set for release on May 31 on Bros Records.

Bounce was recorded during breaks from their extensive 2018 Canadian, US and European tours. The power blues-rock trio laid down 13 new songs with 12 originals including “Picked A Bad Day”, a collaboration recorded with American bluesman JP Soars in Florida and 1 cover, the Anthony "Duster" Bennett song “Jumpin' at Shadows” (popularized by Peter Green during his tenure in Fleetwood Mac).

Deeply anchored in the blues-rock idiom, Bounce is the trio’s most accomplished recording to date, led by the first-rate vocals and guitar of Paul DesLauriers, Sam Harrisson’s precise and masterful drums and newcomer Alec McElcheran on bass. The level of musical chemistry and comradery at work here is undeniable.

The Paul DesLauriers Band will be embarking on tours that will showcase their original brand of blues-rock to audiences in Germany, Switzerland and the US before they get to meet their Canadian fans on summer dates across Canada.

Later in the Fall, the band will play Palais Montcalm in Quebec City (November 21 and 22) to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Deep Purple’s Concerto for Group & Orchestra with Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden) and L’Orchestre Symphonique de Québec under the direction of Paul Mann.

Dudley Taft – Simple Life
Format: CD
Label: American Blues Artist Group
Releasedatum: 6 september 2019

Cincinnati based guitarist Dudley Taft shows his softer side on his seventh album, “Simple Life,” revealing the depth of his influences from classic pop to blues to progressive rock. But, make no mistake, he retains that jagged edge guitar slinger profile that has brought him international acclaim. The collection of eleven original tracks of driving rock anthems & soaring ballads and an inspired rendition of a blues classic were recorded at the home studio he bought from Peter Frampton, saving it from demolition six years ago.
The sessions feature members of Taft’s touring band and special guest, Walfredo Reyes Jr., who lays down drums and percussion on seven tracks.
The album opens with a thundering jungle drum beat from Chris Ellison, who runs his own school “Now Drum” in Cincinnati, on an anthem about the joy in finding true love ‘Give Me A Song.’ Taft then lays out his full rock ‘n’ roll manifesto and pursuit of the finer things on the riff-based title track ‘Simple Life.’ The tune glides along smoothly until Taft tosses in a 2112 inspired bridge and one of his hot guitar solos. He further declares the depths of his devotion on the hard-swinging blues ‘I Can’t Live Without You’ that features soaring duel lead guitar.
The gritty rocker, ‘In Your Way,’ is a cutting rebuke of a troublesome bully, and the lesson in self-reliance ‘Don’t Let Them Get Away,’ uses a mixture of sweet and swaggering grooves to prove its point. The years Taft spent on the Seattle scene are easily heard on the loping grunge ballad ‘Death By Bliss,’ and the heavy funk of ‘Bombs Away,’ has some indelible Hendrix influences.
Taft previously released his version of the Warren Hayes composition ‘If Heartaches Were Nickels’ on his 2016 album “Live In Europe,” and is joined once again by acclaimed bass man and “All Blues” radio host John Kessler on the more refined studio version, that finds him holding back the tempo and digging deeper into the melodic and emotional strains of the deep slow blues.
Touches of Lennon and McCartney and pure Gospel fire can be felt on the inspirational ‘Never Fade.’ The big rock sound of ‘Pouring Down’ was surely gleaned from his years writing and touring with the upstart bands Sweet Water and Second Coming, and his ode to the love of his life, ‘Shine,’ is a mixture of hot licks and soulful harmony. Taft declares he has “Found My Queen,” on ‘Back To You,’ another riff rocker from his hip pocket that closes out the album he dedicates to his wife Michelle, who graces the album art alongside her guitar-slinging man.
“Simple Life” is a strong statement of conviction from a road-tested singer songwriter, who has earned the right to share his truth on his own terms.

S&A 2017

Pioneers of the London Acid Jazz scene, The Brand New Heavies translated their love for the funk grooves of the 1970s into a sophisticated sound that carried the torch for classic soul in an era dominated by Hip-Hop. Formed in 1985 by drummer/keyboardist Jan Kincaid, guitarist Simon Bartholomew, and bassist/keyboardist Andrew Levy - longtime school friends from the London suburb of Ealing - The Brand New Heavies were originally an instrumental unit inspired by the James Brown and Meters records its members heard while clubbing the rare groove scene in vogue at the moment. The trio soon began recording their own music, gaining enormous exposure when their demo tracks were spun at the influential Cat in the Hat Club.

Eventually adding a brass section, the Brand New Heavies built a cult following throughout the London club circuit, surviving the shift that saw the rare groove scene fade in the wake of acid house. After an earlier recording deal with Cooltempo yielded the single "Got to Give," the Heavies -- now including vocalist Jay Ella Ruth -- signed with the fledgling indie label Acid Jazz; recorded on a budget of just 8,000 pounds, the group's self-titled LP appeared in 1990 to strong critical acclaim, resulting in a licensing deal with the American company Delicious Vinyl. With Ruth now out of the band, Delicious Vinyl hand-picked N'dea Davenport as her successor, insisting the Heavies re-record tracks from their debut for their first U.S. effort, also an eponymous release that appeared in 1992.

After scoring at home with "Dream Come True" and "Stay This Way," the single "Never Stop" soon landed on the American R&B charts, with the Heavies the first British group to accomplish such a feat with a debut single since Soul II Soul several years earlier; a subsequent New York performance augmented by rappers Q-Tip (A Tribe Called Quest) and MC Serch (3rd Bass) inspired the group to begin absorbing Hip-Hop, and that summer they cut "Heavy Rhyme Experience Vol. 1", an album including guest appearances by rappers including Main Source, Gang Starr, Grand Puba, and the Pharcyde. 1994's Brother Sister, which went platinum in Britain, was Davenport's last recording with the Heavies before beginning a solo career; she was replaced by singer Siedah Garrett in time for 1997's Shelter. Two years later, the group reappeared with a British best-of album entitled Trunk Funk: The Best of the Brand New Heavies; the title was recycled the following year for an American compilation, Trunk Funk Classics: 1991-2000, which featured a new song recorded with Davenport. In early 2006 it was announced that Davenport would be reuniting with the group. A new album, Get Used to It, was released later that year and was followed by a tour of the U.K. and Europe. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide

"Blues doesn’t have many boundaries. There are common forms but also other ways to express the sound and feeling.  The irony is that most blue music make people happy when they hear it. The music is always evolving but the roots of the sound are simplicity and emotion."
Altered Five Blues Band:
Blues Power, Ten Thousand Watts!
The bad boys from Milwaukee, Altered Five Blues Band, are back, bringing all the blues power they could generate in their fifth album “Ten Thousand Watts”(2019). The supercharged blues party is sure to satisfy the needs of all dedicated fans worldwide. The stalwart quintet, led by steamroller vocalist Jeff Taylor and live wire guitarist Jeff Schroedl, reunited with Grammy winning producer Tom Hambridge in Nashville at Ocean Way Studios in the spring of 2019. For 17 years, Altered Five Blues Band has been winning audiences with a swaggering stomp of bruising, barrelhouse grit. From day one, Altered Five dared to be different. The quintet formed in 2002 and earned a reputation for its inventive arrangements and distinctive sound. Within a few years, A5 caught the ear of Cold Wind Records and, in 2008, signed a recording contract with the Minneapolis blues label.
The debut album featured the band’s penchant for putting an earthy spin on numbers; the aptly titled “Bluesified” included roadhouse versions of ten popular songs. The group performed live on three television morning shows and honed its sound playing regular club, festival, and concert dates. In the ensuing years, A5 turned its attention to recording and performing its own material, and the 2012 release of “Gotta Earn It” drew rave reviews. The band’s third album, entitled “Cryin’ Mercy,” delivered the next chapter in A5’s musical odyssey. The band’s fourth album, “Charmed & Dangerous,” scored a 2018 Blues Music Award nomination for Best Emerging Artist Album and Song of the Year at both the Independent Music Awards and Wisconsin Music Awards in 2018.

What were the reasons that you started the Blues n' Soul researches and experiments? What is the story behind the band's name?
Jeff Taylor (JT): I've always had an interest in the blues from an early age. Blues records were always being played in my house as a child. I feel it was a natural progression for our band to go from playing cover tunes to original songs. After only a few years the band just seemed ready for that challenge. I'm surprised at how much the band had grown in the area of songwriting. It was important for us to find our own voice and our own sound. Our strength lies with the arrangements of the songs and the overall improvement in our ability to write songs.
Jeff Schroedl (JS): We like a lot of musical styles but the blues is the basis for everything we do. We all relate to the lyrics, grooves, and overall vibe of the music. There’s power, improvisation, and dynamics—it all feels good to us. Our band name goes back to us just trying to build our own sound. There are five of us in the band, and we’ve always tried to bring something new to a familiar style of music.
How do you describe 'Ten Thousand Watts' songbook and sound? What characterizes new album in comparison to previous?
JT: Ten Thousand Watts has a big bold feel that is unique to our sound. This is just a continuation of the work up to this point. We also took a little more time to play the songs at shows to get an idea of how the public would like them. The reactions to the songs during shows have been very positive. We know we have something special when we play a song for the first time and people are up dancing. It's always a rush to see people dancing to new music. It's very exciting.
JS: Our new album picks up where our last album, Charmed & Dangerous, left off. It’s our own brand of contemporary blues. The music can be powerful at times but also expressive in other ways. We try to write songs that both we enjoy and other people can relate to. The biggest difference with this album is that we recorded all the tracks in Nashville over four days. It has more of a live feel to it, and a lot of energy.
"Milwaukee is a Blue Collar city. People work very hard for their money and want to support live music. It would be nice to have more blues clubs in the city. This was the case many years ago. It would be very difficult to make a living playing blues in the city right now. Those times have come and gone. I think basic economics had a lot to do with that."
Are there any memories from 'Ten Thousand Watts' sessions which you’d like to share? What touched (emotionally) you from Tom Hambridge?
JT: Tom has never tried to make to changes to our music. He just worked with what was already there. That's what makes him so unique. He's really interested in what you are really trying to say musically. We were a lot more prepared to record this CD. I think we all learned a lot more about the process of recording this time around. This is the first time recording in a big studio. There was a lot of excitement and anticipation leading up to going to Nashville and working with Tom in a new environment. It's always exciting to watch Tom work. He has so many great ideas and is never critical. He has a way of getting the best out of you.
JS: This is our third album with Tom so the process was really comfortable for us. We were more prepared for the sessions than ever before, which allowed time to consider subtle ideas and changes. We tracked at Ocean Way Studios. The band had never before recorded in a really big studio like that, so we were a little nervous at the beginning. The first song we tracked was “Ten Thousand Watts.” It sounded great right from the start which helped us relax and play our best.
What are some of the most important lessons you have learned from your paths in music circuits?
JT: Stay humble! Stay hungry! Don't just settle. If you have something to say musically, then say it. Do what you have to do to get that musical message out there. Stay true to yourself and never let anyone get way of what you are trying to accomplish as a musician. Tell your own story! Blues is the musical interpretation of the human condition. The stories that are being told through blues music is universal. Blues is the truth!
JS: There are many talented musicians writing, recording, and performing blues music these days. Everyone has their own sound and approach. The biggest lesson is to be ourselves, and keep doing our own thing. Don’t try to emulate anyone else; stay focused on doing what feels natural. That’s what makes our music distinctive.
"For 17 years, Altered Five Blues Band has been winning audiences with a swaggering stomp of bruising, barrelhouse grit. From day one, Altered Five dared to be different. The quintet formed in 2002 and earned a reputation for its inventive arrangements and distinctive sound."
Do you consider the Blues a specific music genre and artistic movement or do you think it’s a state of mind?
JT: Bonnie Raitt said it best. " As long as people get together romantically, there will always be blues music." Blues has changed over the years but the stories and situations between people will always be universal. Everyone experiences heartache, joy, and pain. Blues allows the musician to explore those emotions with quite a bit of room for creativity. This is what makes writing blues songs so interesting.
JS: I’ve never really thought about it. Blues doesn’t have many boundaries. There are common forms but also other ways to express the sound and feeling. The irony is that most blue music make people happy when they hear it. The music is always evolving but the roots of the sound are simplicity and emotion.
Make an account of the case of the blues in Milwaukee. What characterize the sound of local blues scene?
JT: Milwaukee is a Blue Collar city. People work very hard for their money and want to support live music. It would be nice to have more blues clubs in the city. This was the case many years ago. It would be very difficult to make a living playing blues in the city right now. Those times have come and gone. I think basic economics had a lot to do with that. Blues festivals are very popular right now. Many blues bands have an opportunity to showcase their talent by just playing the festivals. Social media is the new frontier and this is where many bands can get recognition. There are many fine blues musicians in Milwaukee and we are fortunate to part of that special community.
JS: We have many exceptional blues musicians here in Milwaukee. Lots of blues jams and outdoor festivals feature blues music. There’s also a lot of history here with Paramount Records being located about 20 miles north of the city. Our sound is melting pot of music from Milwaukee and the surround area, including Chicago which is 90 miles to the south. Our new album once again features Milwaukeean Steve Cohen playing harmonica on a couple songs.
